An article that was published in the Austin American-Statesman on 18 Feb 1943 titled “Discharges Whittle Ranks of Texas Defense Guard ” discussing discharges in all four companies of the 5th Battalion (Austin) are reducing the strength and creating vacancies. Most of the guardsmen that were discharged to enter the armed forces and join the war effort. More that 15,000 men had received basic military training in the Texas Defense Guard and now in combat forces.
