The Texas Guardsman – June 1943

The Texas Guardsman Inaugural Magazine from June of 1943. The Texas Guardsman was a monthly publication by the Texas State Guard Officers Association. In this edition you will find articles on:

  1. The Houston Light Guard which started in 1873 and was composed of the 2nd Battalion of the Texas Defense Guard/Texas State Guard during WWII. It occupied the famed Caroline Street Armory in Houston, now the home of the Buffalo Soldiers Museum.
  2. Peacock Military Academy’s 2nd Training and Research Unit. The Peacock Academy was a military boy’s school in San Antonio that closed in 1973. During WWII, it created the only school training and research unit for the Texas Defense / State Guard and continued maintaining a close relationship with the guard until its closing.
  3. The “Battle of Port Isabel”, which was a land and water field exercise carried out by the 24th Battalion of Texas State Guard (Brownsville) at Port Isabel on 11 April 1943.
  4. A short biography introducing the new Adjutant General of Texas, Brig. General Arthur B. Knickerbocker, who played a large role in Texas State Guard History after joining the Texas Defense Guard
