The Texas Guardsman – January 1944

The Texas Guardsman Magazine from January of 1944. The Texas Guardsman was a monthly publication by the Texas State Guard Officers Association. In this edition you will find articles on:

  1. Guard Week Nets 6000 Recruits with the best results being Austin’s 5th Battalion which gained 127 new members. C Company of the 19th Battalion in Dallas hosted a “War Fair” on their regular drill night. November 7-13 was designated “State Guard Week” by Governor Coke Stevenson by proclamation.
  2. Knife Fighting based on what was originally published in The Infantry Journal. The knife is an ideal weapon for close-quarter battle because your opponent will not see it coming until it is too late. Also, there are several psychological barriers involved in knife fighting.
  3. Texas Guardettes doing a fine job even though they are only a year old. The 5th Battalion of the Texas Guardettes in Fort Worth wore blue uniforms and were often found in Red Cross workrooms, Service Men’s Centers and patriotic drives. The Texas Guardettes served the Texas State Guard in an auxiliary capacity.
