An article that was published in the Houston Chronicle on 26 October 1941 titled “Houston Squadron In Defense Guard Ready For Any Emergency” discussing Squadron 2 of Texas Defense Guard Aviation Branch of the Houston. Squadron 2 was commanded by Maj. R. Earl McKaughan and had 22 aircraft, 45 pilots, and 110 enlisted men assigned. Squadron 2 was the largest unit in the Texas Defense Guard Aviation Branch at the time. The photographs depict: Maj. R. Earl McKaughan, a sentry guarding squadron planes and First Lieutenant John K. Hemp about to take off with another Squadron Member for blind instrument practice.
